There's nothing quite like jumping into a nice cool pool on a hot summer day. For this reason, many children across the country choose to join a summer swim team each year.

If you are the coach of a summer swim team, you have likely seen just how wonderful the experience of being part of one of these teams can be for a child. You have probably also noticed how important it is for everyone on the team to mesh. Without that special bond, the team is not nearly as effective or memorable for those involved.

Make Time for Bonding

Sometimes coaches will get so caught up in improving the team they forget to allow the team members to bond. However, because bonding is such an important part of creating a strong team, it is important that you nip this habit in the bud.

Allow your members a few minutes at the end of practice to discuss their personal lives, and encourage everyone to arrive early and chat while preparing for practice. This will give your team the time it needs to really mesh.

Encourage Connecting Outside of Practice

Because chatting during practice is not always possible or practical, it is a good idea to also encourage bonding outside of practice. Go out to dinner together once in a while, or take part in a local event together. Your team will benefit and everyone will have more fun!
