Whether you love or despair of the San Diego Padres as a ball club, you have to give them props for doing a great job when it comes to branding and promotion. Their simple blue and white logo is recognized throughout the country, and they're on top of their game when it comes to promotional giveaways that build loyalty and boost attendance at Petco Park. This week I'm taking a look at the Padres' logo as used on their custom jerseys and other marketing materials. I'll leave the analysis of their baseball game to others more qualified!
Logo Changes Over Time
The Padres broke onto the baseball scene with their first game on April 8, 1969. As with other major league teams, their custom jerseys have long been an integral part of the game, separating them from their competitors, providing a common identity, and unifying the members and fans in the process.
The San Diego Padres have been through 6 different logos and 4 different color combinations since their start. The first version depicted a friar wearing brown clothes, standing inside a gold ring. He was holding a bat that said "Padres" on it, with San Diego Padres written just outside the ring. The team's colors were gold and brown. The second logo, unveiled in 1985, was the single word, Padres, printed in their new colors, orange and brown. Their third logo in 1989 was the same as the second, with the new inclusion of a tan circle that said, San Diego Baseball Club. In 1991, they made the tan circle blue. In 2004, the logo became the outline of home plate, with an ocean wave that read, San Diego Padres at the top. In 2012, they started alternating between three: a depiction of Petco Park, with Padres, est. 1969, written below; the original logo of the friar, now in blue and white; and the initials SD intertwined in the middle of a circle that reads, San Diego Padres Baseball club, also blue and white.
Marketing With Jerseys And More
Just look around town on any game day, and you'll see evidence of the Padre's current marketing and advertising success -- their logo is everywhere! The Padres cleverly keep interest in their old logos alive by gifting local little leagues with custom jerseys in the colors and styles of vintage Padres uniforms. Official Padres jerseys, caps and more are for sale at outlets around town as well the stadium and online. And not only do you see all sorts of people wearing their own Padres custom jerseys, but you'll also notice a variety of caps, sweatshirts and t-shirts promoting our hometown team. It's really not hard to find something to wear that has a Padres logo on it. They've also gone beyond the basics and put the team logo on all kinds of merchandise from baby shoes, to ties, cups, travel mugs, watches, and mousepads. At EmbroidMe San Diego, we can do the same thing for your business - your logo can go on just about anything. Just take a look at what the Padres have done with their logo, and see if it gives you any ideas!
Custom Jerseys for Your Business?
One of the great things about success stories is that you can learn from other people's experience, and realize they aren't the only ones with the power to succeed. And I'm happy to tell you that you don't have to be a major league ball team to merchandise your logo. Embroidery and screen printing have relatively low minimums, and over the years, we've learned a thing or two about how to reproduce all types of logos economically. If you'd like to have custom jerseys made for your team, or are just wondering about putting your logo on different types of merchandise, contact us. We'd be happy to help you "hit it out of the park" by creating a selection of logo merchandise your constituency will love.
